How to Sell a Car

Selling your carSelling your car can be a challenge if you don’t know what you’re doing, but if you do know what you’re doing, it can really be a breeze.  Selling your car is as easy as selling that old couch in your living room.  As long as you market it right, you’ll get it off your hands in no time.

Tips on selling your car the right way

You want to know the value

Before you even start your selling process, how much is your car worth?  Your best bet is to head on over to KBB.  The Kelly Blue Book is going to be able to give you a fair price for your car.  Make sure that you’re honest with you assessment so that you can get a fair value.  You’ll want to base your car price around this price.  Whenever I price a car, I usually go about 10-15% under their value.

Who are you catering too?

Are you going to be selling this car to a younger driver, or an older couple?  The reason that you want to think this is because you’ll want to know how to market it.  You know that 85 year old are most likely not going to be browsing Craigslist for a car.

Spruce up your car

No one wants to look at a dirty car.  This is when you want to clean up your car on the inside, and out.  If you don’t have the time, I would recommend that you get a professional service to do so.  You’ll want to wax the outside, and make it look like new.  Would you buy a car that has fast food bags inside, and smells?

Advertise your car

There are many ways to sell your car.  I would recommend that you look back on a post that I wrote titled, What are the best ways to sell a car? I would recommend services like eBay, and Craigslist.  They reach a huge audience, and the fees are minimal.

Know how to market it

You want to make your ad catchy when you create it.  Create terms such as OBO (or best offer), and must go!  You want to make it sound like a good deal, and you’re welcoming all offers.  If you just write something along the lines of 1999 Ford Explorer, $4,000, no offers lower accepted.  With that kind of ad, who’s going to call you?

Show off the car

Once you get that ad up, you’re going to find people calling you up.  Make sure that you can show the car at reasonable times, because no one wants to come at 10PM or 6 in the morning.  When you show off your car, most people will want to test run it.  I will usually either hold their wallet or car keys as collateral.  I would just do what’s safe for you.

Getting your payment

Once you find a buyer, and the price is what you want, you want to make sure that you either get cash, or a certified check.  Never ever accept a personal check, because it could be seen as a scam.  Most people will understand this.  Once you get your certified funds, hand over the title, fill everything out on the back, and you’re good to go!
