Six Degrees of Automotive Separation – John Deere and Cord

John Deere and Cord - connect in six steps or less

While we’re constantly surprised and informed by the links between automotive companies that we have discovered while putting together the Hemmings Six Degrees of Automotive Separation Challenge series, we have occasionally wondered how long we can continue this series without retreading old ground.

But then we uncover a new link and realize that we have plenty of fallow land to turn up. For instance, we already knew, thanks to Bill Vossler’s book, “Cars, Trucks, and Buses Made by Tractor Companies,” that John Deere – yes, the tractor maker – had briefly dabbled in automotive production in the early years of the 20th century. And through at least one of those efforts, we can connect John Deere to Cord, the briefly lived automotive empire that could have been. Can you?

The rules, as before, are simple: A connection consists of one company owning another, merging with another or sharing another’s parts. Explain your connections, and as before, the point isn’t necessarily to do it in the least number of connections, but to do it with style and with obscure connections. If you need examples, check out our previous Hemmings Six Degrees of Automotive Separation Challenges.

By the way, we take suggestions for these challenges, so step right up. If you do submit a suggestion, make sure you have a path in mind if you end up stumping everybody
