Open Diff: how about the long-term future of the collector car hobby?

1962 Corvette - just a pretty picture

Our last Open Diff brought a lot of good responses, mostly on the future of the collector car hobby and on getting kids involved in old cars. It’s obvious there’s still a lot of passion driving the hobby, and I dig it.

So let’s open up the lines of communication again with another Open Diff. As before, feel free to speak your mind on any issue related to the collector car hobby. Or tell us a story. Or tell us what you’d like to see us do better in the magazines. Or rant about that one bolt you struggled with on your project car. Or yell at us for always calling it a hobby. Whatever you feel like talking about, it’s fair game.

Also as before, I’m going to toss out a topic suggestion, inspired by John Krewson’s essay on Jalopnik, “Is There A Future for American Motoring?” As John put it, and as we discovered last time, the kids are alright. But many of the environmentalists out there want to brand us gross polluters, Madison Avenue and Detroit and Washington just want you to buy new stuff instead of relish the old stuff, and the hobby isn’t getting any less expensive. Are we ultimately doomed to becoming no more than Civil War re-enactors? Or is there a long-term future to collector cars?
